Restoration of Public Lands
At Open Space STL, we are committed to the restoration of public lands through strategic partnerships with federal, state, county, and municipal agencies. Our work ensures that vital ecosystems in the St. Louis region are actively managed, protected, and restored for the benefit of both wildlife and people.
To achieve this mission, we have established two major programs: Operation Wild Lands (OWLs) and the Community Stewardship Alliance (CSA). These initiatives engage volunteers, land managers, and community leaders in efforts to revitalize and sustain public spaces and parks across the region.

WHAT IS PUBLIC LAND RESTORATION?
Public land restoration is the active process of repairing and revitalizing degraded ecosystems on government-owned land, such as national parks, forests, and urban green spaces. This involves addressing environmental challenges like erosion, habitat destruction, invasive species, and pollution. Key strategies include:
Revegetation – Planting native species to restore ecological balance.
Invasive Species Control – Removing non-native plants that disrupt natural habitats.
Fire Management – Using controlled burns to enhance ecosystem resilience.
Riparian Restoration – Protecting and rehabilitating wetlands and stream banks.
Habitat Restoration – Improving conditions for native wildlife species.
Why Public Land Restoration Matters
Restoring public lands is critical in a rapidly developing urban and suburban landscape. As conservationist John Muir once said:
"The clearest way into the Universe is through a forest wilderness."
By preserving and revitalizing our public spaces, we create healthier ecosystems, provide essential wildlife habitats, and maintain places for people to connect with nature.
Through the combined efforts of Open Space STL, dedicated volunteers, and our conservation partners, we are ensuring that public lands remain a vital part of the St. Louis region’s environmental and community well-being.
Municipal Partnerships
-
Open Space STL's Operation Wild Lands (OWLs) program offers an ideal solution for municipalities in the St. Louis region seeking effective and sustainable approaches to restore and maintain their parks. By engaging volunteers of all ages in hands-on conservation efforts, OWLs facilitates proactive management of public lands, addressing the challenges of maintaining urban green spaces with limited municipal resources. The program’s focus on improving wildlife habitats and enhancing outdoor recreation opportunities makes it a cost-effective and community-driven alternative to traditional park maintenance strategies.
-
Through initiatives such as area cleanups, trail development and maintenance, invasive species removal, native plant re-vegetation, and tree plantings, OWLs delivers tangible ecological and recreational benefits. Municipalities partnering with OWLs can restore native biodiversity, mitigate environmental degradation, and create healthier, more resilient green spaces. Additionally, the program's emphasis on volunteer involvement fosters community pride and stewardship, encouraging local residents to take an active role in the preservation of their neighborhood parks.
Furthermore, OWLs provides educational field trips and learning opportunities that align with municipal goals of promoting environmental awareness and outdoor engagement. Municipal staff benefit from the expertise and resources provided by Open Space STL, reducing operational costs and administrative burdens. By integrating OWLs into their park management plans, municipalities can enhance the ecological value of their green spaces while strengthening community connections and supporting long-term sustainability goals. This collaborative approach ensures that parks remain vibrant, accessible, and beneficial for both people and wildlife for generations to come.
