Watershed Programs
Healthy watersheds are essential for clean water, thriving wildlife, and resilient communities. Open Space STL is committed to protecting and restoring the region’s waterways through hands-on conservation efforts and community-driven programs.
For over 50 years, Operation Clean Stream has been one of the nation’s longest-running and largest river cleanups. Each year, thousands of volunteers help remove trash and debris from the Meramec River watershed, improving water quality and habitat for local wildlife.
The goal of this and previous planning efforts is to achieve and restore the Meramec River and its tributary streams to water quality standards, and to maintain healthy streams throughout the Lower Meramec Watershed.
Focusing on the Missouri and Mississippi River confluence, the Confluence Trash Bash mobilizes volunteers to tackle pollution in one of North America’s most critical water systems. This annual event prevents waste from traveling downstream and harming aquatic ecosystems.
The River des Peres Trash Bash is a dedicated cleanup effort focused on the urban watershed of the River des Peres, which flows through St. Louis before reaching the Mississippi River. Volunteers work together to remove litter and debris, improving water quality and protecting wildlife in this vital waterway.
