The Meramec River Poem
The Meramec River (Composed by Steve Nagle)
From the fountains of the Ozarks to the Mississippi shore
Ole Meramec River runs free forever more
Let the river flow, let the river flow
Hallelujah!
Let the river flow …
From the mountains of the Ozarks to the Mississippi shore
The people of the River live in legend and in lore
Let the river flow, let the river flow
Hallelujah!
Let the river flow …
The river has many voices, some are weak and some are strong,
If you listen with your heart – you’ll hear the river’s song
Let the river flow, let the river flow,
Hallelujah!
Let the river flow…
Have you found the pearly mussels along the gravel bars
Or spied a little levee that once was trucks and cars?
Have you paddled your canoe in rain and sun and snow
Or gazed upon the river in the valley far below?
Let the river flow, let the river flow
Hallelujah!
Let the river flow…
Does your spirit take wing at the first sign of Spring,
Do you feel redeemed when the little bluebird sings?
Have you seen the Great Blue Heron sailin’ ‘cross the trees
Or touched a hellbender and felt that summer breeze?
Let the River flow, let the river flow,
Hallelujah!
Let the river flow…
The river rocks and the river rolls
The river sings and the river flows
The river gives and the river knows
The river lives – let it save your soul
Hallelujah! Let the river flow
Healing waters for our sons and daughters
