Volunteers Plant Trees in North St. Louis

On Sunday, April 22 community volunteers celebrated Earth Day by planting trees and shrubs in St. Louis City. Volunteers planted six trees, including Redbuds and a Blackgum tree, and shrubs to restore the Belt Loop Triangle, a historic green space in North St. Louis. Volunteers braved the drizzle and enjoyed a picnic lunch that included music and a presentation about the history of the Belt Loop Triangle, which was a stop for the St. Louis streetcar in the early 1900s. Thanks to everyone who came out! We’re looking forward to seeing these trees and shrubs bloom later this spring.

Green City Coalition (GCC) works with neighborhood residents to convert vacant properties to vibrant community green spaces. GCC is a partnership between the City of St. Louis, Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Missouri Botanical Garden working in collaboration with a growing network of cross-sector organizations. As a GCC network member, Open Space Council is leading a series of community events in the Wells Goodfellow neighborhood, where nearly 9 acres of vacant land is being transformed to ecologically rich urban green spaces that promote healthy, vibrant and engaged communities through a deeper connection with nature.
