Operation Wild Lands Spring Update

Removing invasive bush honeysuckle

Spring Operation Wild Lands

The Open Space Council’s spring Operation Wild Lands program is off to a successful start. On March 5, over 30 volunteers removed more than 300 mature honeysuckle plants from 1/4 acre of the Deer Creek Greenway in Maplewood’s Deer Creek Park. During a water break, volunteers were treated to a presentation from artist and wood worker Dale Dufer about using bush honeysuckle for table legs and alternative ideas for upcycling honeysuckle.

The work is not finished! This April, the Open Space Council is looking forward to working with citizen and school group volunteers to continue removing invasive honeysuckle from the Deer Creek Greenway. We are also excited to participate in Great Rivers Greenway’s Volunteer Blitz Day in celebration of Earth Day 2016! Stay tuned for more updates about Operation Wild Lands. Special thanks to our sponsoring partners Great Rivers Greenway and Chipotle.
